I have been lurking here for some weeks now and have posted a couple of
times. This is my bio.

What's left of the hair on my head is nearly white. I don't recall how
young I was when my Dad, a printer by trade but a galoot at heart (born
in '94), started giving me an eggbeater, a screwdriver, etc. whilst he
worked or tinkered in the basement. I "helped" him build 3 boats over
the years, all done with hand tools and cardboard patterns he drew up.
After his death, I discovered that his father was a farmer and
carpenter. His Dad died when he was only 3; so he never knew him.
Maybe sawdust and shavings addiction is a genetic thing.

I have worked in the information technology field, in the finance
industry mostly, since the mid 60's. Managed to work my way thru
college and get a degree in business admin before there were computer
science degrees. My ww'kng has been varied. I've mostly done carpentry
(repairs, decks, room additions, remodeling) but I've done some
cabinetry and simple furniture construction. I have hand planes,
drills, handsaws, etc. that belonged to Dad plus some of those tailed
apprentices that I've acquired over the years. My only bench p@w@r
t@@ls are a TS and router table. I find that I really like to plane
wood; only wish I could master techniques that would allow me to make
squared, parallel sides.

Thanks for listening. I hope I can contribute here in some small way.

BTW: I discovered that my return receipt option was turned on for the
first couple of posts I made here. Mea Culpa and a thousand apologies.

hmmmmm.......
Bob Thompson my good carpenter friend used to
tell me, when I pulled the straight edge to check
the edges after my Stanley #8 was done:

"wot's wrong with yar eyes?"

As I've learned over the years, sometimes the step
between a good parallel squared edge and a perfect
one involves a lot less technique than we might think.
And a lot more of a simple, "educated eye".

This one just reminded me of something else. Twenty
or so years ago there was a fad to add all sorts of gizmos
to straight overhead fishing reels. All sorts of *l*ctr*c
thingamabobs were available for a while, all with the purpose
of "helping" us fishos avoid the dreaded overrun and its
consequent huge tangle.

A friend of mine who was quite a good caster always ended
up throwing that darn line longer than I could, with all
my funny reels. His was a 30 year old, WWII simple overhead
reel. All he did to control the cast was use his thumb.
I called it the "educated thumb". It's been a long time
since we last fished together and he's passed away, bless
his soul. But all my overhead casting reels today are as
simple as his were back then. And just as effective.

Anyways, enough of "Sat night fever". Welcome to
the Porch. Enjoy it, this is a rare place. Full of rare
people. You'll feel right at home.

I say, if it walks like a duck........

Welcome from another relative newcomer with very few "backups" as
well.

I'm not sure quite what you think a galoot is
meant to be, but judging by the (very, very interesting)
information on your site, you fit my idea of a good
galoot pretty damn well.

Welcome to the porch.

No Sir! I am not that guy! That album is a research album for a group of
folks working on a project. I am very sorry about the mix up. The text
gives credit to the builder of the bench, and the irony is I have since
erased it.(pic and all) You will still have to quest for the origianl
maker.

Michael

As other denizens of this list have noted, if you are not a Galoot
than we have to undertake a serious re-thinking of what a Galoot is.
You fit the definition to a "T". Welcome. You'll find camaraderie,
exchanges of information, jokes, get togethers, questions / answers,
laughter, support in troubled times, and in general, simply the best
bunch of people on the internet bar none.

Don't be afraid to volunteer your expertise if a question comes up,
to ask a question if you are pondering something or to simply present
one of those musings that typify a Galoot (such as... does anyone
know when rubber was first used in tools? I recently picked up an
1870's patented mitre box that has rubber rollers).

And furthermore, please ping me off list as I have a small order for
your blacksmithing skills.

I'm not quite so sure myself. I mean, we got a guy here who works in a museum
and lives in New England someplace and doesn't have extra tools? Like, what?,
lost the directions to the swap meet? Leach goes out and pulls down all the
estate sale signs where he lives before he can get a look at them? All the old
barns in the neighborhood have already been sacked and the widows are toting
shotguns?
I believe this boy needs some support!! And that's what we're here for, eh??
Bank up the fires, bring on the goats head, the SGFH is on the case!!
Welcome aboard Michael! Step this way.
Somebody swing by and drag him to the next auction, huh? Make sure he gets to
the next meeting? Take him aside and talk to him, huh Bob? (welcome back, btw)
Todd, you get up there and wave 30 or 40 anvils and Emmerts under his nose. We
can ruin this guys life! I say he's a prime candidate. Just give us a chance.
heh heh.
   yours, Scott

I don't think that's the case at all. I think this guy is so advanced
that he's actually found a justification for each and every tool he
owns, even though (to the untrained, naive eye, especially a passing
SWMBO) they might *appear* to be redundant duplicates.

BugBear (who finally convinced SWMBO that 2 #4's (*) was
      reasonable)

Greetings! There seems to now be a half dozen of us in the general region of
the Twin Cities. Somone probably ought to organize a get-together sometime
when it gets warmer. In the meantime, the February MWTCA meeting in Medina
is coming up fast and just after that is the April meeting (Hastings?).
These can be a lot of fun.

It was on for a few weeks a couple of years ago, but they stopped running it
as soon as they knew I had the VCR programmed to record it (as opposed to
catching it "live"). Never seen a sign of it since then.

Hey, welcome to the list. We've had brothers before, but is this our
first father/son combo? (Might be some lurkers out there...)

Please let us know whenever you have some more holdfasts
available - they seem to be a popular item. I suspect satisfying the
demand would make you pretty tired of making holdfasts, though.

Oh, and thanks in advance for all those trees....
