Sandusky's 1877 catalog identifies a "89" as a plated halving plane.
"Plated" means a steel wear plate on the fence. Halving planes
were use tp make ship lap joints and I am sure various other
tasks.
It sounds like the plane has been modified. Someone wanted to use
it cross-grain.
