Only by looking at the results.  I see a lot of repairs that are
nearly invisible, and others where grain doesn't match because the
thing was intended to be painted.   (soon becomes invisible and
stays that way 100 years or so)

Veneer type surface patch? No.  I see them to fill hinge mortices
that are on the wrong side, and sometimes to fill the latch mortice.
These guys were incredibly good!

I'm happy to hear it was a specialty, and not something I should be
able to handle.
