I guess I've been lurking for about a year or two, sneaking in the odd post here and there, but I think it's finally time to crawl out from under the porch. My name's Steve Denvir, and I've been butchering wood for about 7 or 8 years now. I'm lucky enough to be able to work in a fully-heated and insulated one-car garage (hey, it can get cold up here in the Great White North/Toronto), where I turn out mostly Arts and Crafts style furniture. Given that I'm still on the lower slope of the learning curve, and being entirely self-taught, one of the great things about A&C furniture is that it's largely square. At least it's _meant_ to be. Like many, I started off with power tools, but find I'm using hand tools more and more. But at this point, I'm still what might be termed a Normaphrodite. I'm married, with 2 dogs(golden retrievers), and when I'm not in the shop, I write TV and radio commercials and print ads. You can see the fruits of those particular labours at: www.itaintrocketscience.ca After all, you do have to generate income in order to afford all those old tools, right? I'm not a c*ll*ct*r (no, really), but I do restrict my woodie searching and purchasing to Mathiesons. I figure it's one way to impose a certain amount of discipline on rampant tool lust. Otherwise I'd probably be cruising the fleas going "cool, a 3/8 side bead," forgetting I already have 4 of them at home. And I dare anyone, even in this group, to attempt to justify multiple wooden beading planes of the same size :-) That's about it. I'm pleased and honoured to be a part of this group. It's as gracious and generous a bunch as I've ever run across, and as my knowledge increases, I look forward to being able to contribute more. Thanks Steve |

Galoots, A big "Howdy Pardner" to Rex in Tuscon (why couldn't it have been "Rex in Tex.?). Welcome to Galootdom. Pull up an upside down bucket and set a spell. Sounds like you won't need much help from us. You are already pretty handy. Great score on the lumber! You might want to think some more about the 3 inch thick bench. Mine is that thick and it is hard to mount a lot of accessories onto it because it is so thick. Ex. Vises: you have to rout out a big chunk to mount a lot of them to a bench that thick. Just my opinion. I'm sure other galoots will set me straight! But 2 inch maple laminated is plenty strong!! Phil E., Asheville, NC |
