The subscription request said send a quick intro and bio, so here it is.
I am tranferee from Rec.norm (still watch that list) with an interest in old
tools from a users point of view only. (Mechanized joiners scare me, so I
hand join all my own wood.)
I like making hand tools and have made my own versions of the Bridge City try
square, marking gauges, bevel gauge. I tried making a wooden hand plane once
to plane the convex surface of a table but had miserable results. Lately I've
been reading an re-reading Kingshott's book with the notion that I would
like to make my own shooting board and infill smoother. With the advice of
some of the list members here I even found a foundry in Houston that will
cast the bodies.
My latest old tool acquisition was a vintage 1930 Sear's lathe that I
cleaned up, painted, serviced and started using. As a result I've been
putting many more round things in my furniture design.
My favorite hand plane lately is my Stanley No. 4 that I got from Patrick
Leach. I seem to use it all the time. From my Grandfather via my Father I
have some other old tools including a Russel Jennings bit set and some old
wood planes.
Oh yeah, I'm a hobbyist making furniture, toys, knick knacks and plantation
shutters (seems like I've been making shutters for years - oops I guess I
have, my wife says I work on a geological clock). I like to carve also.
Other interest include restoring a 1966 Sunbeam Tiger sports car,
writing, and playing golf.
To support my tool habit I help design space stations.
I expect I'll be lurking more than anything absorbing the wealth of the
collective data. Thanks in advance.
