35330 "Rodney Myrvaagnes" <rodneym@i...> 1998‑01‑25 Bio.
Hello,

I was a full time instrument maker from 1972 to 1985,
making mostly Italian harpsochords, some clavichords, and
some organ consoles as a subcontractor. I used old tools
more and more in this work, but also collected tools I
really didn't need (with wife's active cooperation).

Now I am a full time journalist so the tools are more a
collection than for use, but I know how to sharpen and use
everything here. Some things I have no intention of using,
ever (pit saws, for instance :-)).

Some of the gloatable prizes in our collection include a
set of pattern-maker's in-cannel gouges by L. and I.J.
White, of Buffalo, with gorgeous original turned handles, a
chest of ship-joiner's tools by J.R. Tollman, an eight foot
long coopers jointer by Goldsmith of Philadelphia, and lots
of ploughs, some of exotic woods.

The Tollman tools include compass hollows and rounds of a
pattern unique to Tollman AFIK. These tools are shown in
the first edition of Ken Roberts.

My favorite jack plane is a very work razee from the
Tollman set that I have used a lot. It is worn at least 1/4
inch at the toe. I have roughed out a copy in boxwood that
has sat unfinished since I closed my shop.

My most pressing leisure-time activity is sailing, not boat
building.

I live in New York City, which has many other distractions
as well.

Patrick Leach kindly pointed out off list that Cummings and
Tileston have been known to make planes in that pattern,
and that I misspelled Tolman. (He was too polite to come
out and complain, actually)

This appears to be an exceedingly well-mannered list,
compared to some I know.

Hello Rodney,
Good to see you here. Now there's at least two NY area sailors on this
list. One of the nice things about this group is the bio. I didn't
know you were an instrument maker, tho I have followed your posts on
Yacht-L for some time. Once upon a time, I used to make all-wood banjos
and other odd instruments in my shop in Massachusetts. Now, of course,
boats are my obsession. Anyway, welcome. I haven't been here long, but
this is a really fine group.
