Collecting interests:
I started with blacksmithing, because I wanted to do it. I have my own
shop, that doesn't get used as much as it should, though I have gotten to
be a fairly competent smith. Tons of tools--if the Tong Wars break out
again, I am set!!) The tool hunting got to be addictive and when I had all
the blacksmith any marginally sane person would want I started to branch
out....
..into tools made by blacksmiths. Then a few molding planes, since we were
building our own house. And then it got all out of control--wood working
tools, coopers tools and lately, wheelwright and carriagemakers tools.
My interests are still strongly tied to the "use it" point of view. I buy a
tool because of what it did and don't give a damn who made it. I don't find
Stanley the least bit interesting--figured I should collect it at one
point, found I wasn't interested, and dumped the little I had, except for a
few utility planes I use in the shop.
I have been associated with Genesee Country Museum (near Rochester) for
about 15 years, working as a craft interpreter (printer, tin, blacksmith &
wagonmaker); consultant to the curator on tools, etc,; and making
reproductions for use in the village buildings (most of the equipment in
the broom & basket shop) lots of new "old" merchandise for the store. The
big project was setting up the wheelwright/wagonmaker shop, which I did
completely: built the workbenches, vices, shelving, great wheel lathe, etc,
etc, much of it with traditional tools with people watching. We are now
getting into wagon restoration and wheelwrighting.
I do not have well developed merchantile instincts, so I do very little
selling and dealing. There's going to be one hell of an auction when I'm
gone!!!!
