Hello and thanks to everyone out there, long time lurker, first
time poster. I come to be a GIT (galoot in training) by medical as
well as philosophical reasons. The medical reason being asthma and
my philosophy being- the process is as important as the results.
I've been a carpenter most of my adult life, though my
current job
has me doing more painting than carpentry. My focus has always been
in the finish end of construction and I've slowly developed an eye
for fine workmanship. After spending a good amount of time working
in the Bucks County region of Pennsylvania (the famous Washington
crossing the Delaware occurred a few miles south of where I lived),
the contrast between old craftsmanship and current construction
practices has left me with the notion that perhaps the best is
behind us. Not for lack of ability or desire, but the inevitable
result of a high productivity, low cost oriented society.
Learning from the buildings has inspired me to look for
books to
learn about woodworking and how it was done in the past. Now that I
live in Oakland, CA, I'm also inspired by the artistic and creative
energy that seems to envelop the Bay Area. This has led me to rent
a little shop space in an office building down the street from my
apartment, that I share with MWTA (my wife the artist); I claimed
about 200 sq. ft. for myself. I have a basic assortment of old hand
tools that will all need to be upgraded at some point in the
future. Perhaps after I win the lottery.
