273594 Ken Wright 2021‑05‑05 Scrub planes (was Re: flattening a large slab)
Gathered Galoots,

Andrew's post got me to thinking. I have a crappy Stanley "Handyman"
#3 that I'd like to use as a scrub. Can anyone recommend a radius to
grind the iron? Or is that more a matter of personal taste?

On a personal note, the gem of my tools is my Stanley Handyman #4. It
was my father's, and was the first plane I ever used. I wouldn't part
with it for anything!

There is no standard. I have two that are very different, and both of them
appear more curved than Andrew's. My antique German wood-bodied scrub with a
1-1/4" wide blade has an aggressive radius of only 1-1/2", whereas my Lie
Nielsen #40-1/2 has a 1-7/16" wide blade with a radius of 3". With the same
blade projection, the wood-bodied plane takes off less material, but is
easier to push.

Just as a note
My Knight smoother is approx 4" radius on a 1-1/2" wide blade, 1/4" thick.
Hogs the Fritos, but a bit uncomfy in the hand.

My Stanley #40 is approx a 4" radius on a 1-1/4" wide blade. Hogs the
Fritos, more comfy than the Knight.

My LaChappelle horned scrub is approx 3-1/2" radius on a 1-1/4" wide blade.
Not used yet

I have a Pinie.cz b39 scrub, but it has no radius to the blade. Huge
gaping mouth, unlike the 3 45, which is tight. Poor wood finish, hit it
with scotchbrite to smooth it out. No major work yet.
