Didn't see this post to the list so here goes again ...

Bugbear has shown me the error of my ways regarding bio's. Guess if I want
to sit on the porch I should introduce myself.

I'm 30 years old and just recently discovered a love for woodworking. I
work as a software developer for a manufacturing and logistics company out
of Oklahoma city (although lately I feel like I should get my mail forwarded
to Charlotte NC I spend enough time there).

With the long hours and stress of my job I was looking for something to do
to work with my hands after a long day workin' the old noggin. Little did I
realize that the majority of woodworking is thinging about design and
layout. I guess the appeal was to creat something tangible instead of
working with bits and bytes all day long.

Anyway - my father worked his way through school working in a production
shop and always had a little shop out back as a kid. This was one of the
few things we ever did together and I regret not tacking a more active
interest in it at the time. I'm hoping this is something we can spend more
time doing together as he retires even though he's much further away now.

So back to the present - like most people I suspect I came to the hobby (or
maybe lifestyle) thinking you needed a machine to do everything (too many
New Yankee Workshop reruns). Somewhere along the way I ran into Andy Rae's
book "Choosing and Using Handtools". This was an eye opener - I originally
wanted to do wood work to use my hands and here I was quickly becoming a
machine operator. Anyway neadless to say I'm quite a neophyte with a lot to
learn, have yet to make contact with anyone in my area to learn from. Any
galoots from OKC around ? Anyway thats the long of it. I appreciate all
the quick and instructive replies to my last posting and look forward to
participating more actively as I pay my dues.

Thank you,

Joel McCarty
