-20 armstrong@H... (Stan Armstrong) 1970‑01‑01 bio

I asked my first question before giving my bio. But you seem to be a
forgiving lot. I have already received helpful email.

I teach religious studies here in Halifax, where my family and I have been
since I finished grad school in 1968. My wife Barbara and I have three
grown sons, one in a graduate program in Church History, one a computer
programmer, and one a carpenter (currently pursuing sign-making). All are
married, and there are four grandchildren with #5 on the way.

I have gradually accumulated hand and power tools over the years. A couple
of years ago in pursuit of a barely used biscuit jointer, I stumbled on a
widow (whoops! sorry) who was selling off her late husband's shop. Now I
have quite a few hand tools. It took me three hours to load the station
wagon, but, as I was not the first to discover the hoard, it is an uneven
collection. If I use my power tools less in the future, it will be planes
that win my heart. I'm still very much a novice, but using a nicely tuned
plane is spiritual--but I'm preaching to the converted.

I find myself reading Oldtools avidly, just for the satisfaction of
listening to people talk about what they love. The temptation for me is to
collect "mind candy." Admitedly, that is cheaper than collecting planes,
but neither gets much wood cut.

Stan
