Hi there. The protocol suggests that new subscribers introduce themselves.
My name is Mike Dunbar. I have been a professional woodworker for 25 years. I
specialize in exact reproduction Windsor chairs which I make by hand using
either old tools or modern reproductions. I also do a lot of general
furniture making and architectural work using an extensive collection of old
tools. I am particularly fond of molding planes and use moldings where ever
possible.
In regards the recent dialog questioning whether or not tools have become
scarce, that is not my experience. Frequenting my favorite haunts I am
regularly able to find reasonably priced tools that I add to my user
collection.
Last week I acquired a lot of 15 mid 19th century molding planes, all owned
by one woodworker. Forteen were made by Chapin's Union Factory and one by
Pheonix. Most seem to have never been used. Their stocks are still raw wood.
 There is a graduated set of three quirked ogees (2", 1 1/2" and 1"); a 2"
reverse ogee; a 1 1/2 plain ogee; and three pairs of hollows and rounds.
The large sizes make assume the purchaser intended them for achitectural
work. The price was $275. As long as things like this happen, I can't
believe tools are becoming scarce.

Mike Dunbar
