46002 Shooter484@a... 1998‑07‑06 Bio: Steve Elfers
Me: "Hello...My name is Steve and it's been 9 hours since I last applied a
plane to wood..."

All: "HI STEVE"

I, like yourselves, am not here for rehabilitation. I can't remember how I
found this porch. I must have been at a woodworking site a link or two away,
then caught a familiar but brackish odor that could be a mixture of fresh
shavings and methane. Following my nose, I lighted upon a group of like
minded folks, and have lurked about ever since.

Though I''ve been a woodworker of sorts for many years, my ablility to do any
meaningful work has been hampered by the lack of a proper shop. All that is
in the past, however, as I've moved into a house with a sizable piece of
walkout basement with my name on it. A 15 X 41 ft space, to be exact....:)

This group has begun to change my thinking about how that shop should look.
The original design was simply based on workflow....large wood rack inside the
door. tailed jointer and planer for dimensioning, big bandsaw, big table saw
outfeeding to big workbench, now you are in the hand tool area, beautiful tool
cabinet, wall full of planes.....my approach has always been based on the
desire to do good work and a love of quality tools (not always old ones).

As I don't build furniture professionally, I have no real pressure for speed
or cost effectiveness, so why not build in a manner that is the most
satifiying? For me, hand work has always been a pleasure. Hmmm......makes me
wonder if all that power is really necessary.

So, though I may chime in once in a while, I will continue to lurk and listen
and learn. Daddy always said you can't learn nuthin while yer talkin...

My name is Steve Elfers and I live in Sterling, VA with SWMBO and 2 SWMBettes,
ages 1 and 4. I'm a photographer by day, worining in D.C. and beyond covering
news.

(hmm...should I be posting a bio during the FMM frenzy?)
