3544 chandler@e... (Howard Chandler) 1996‑08‑07 bio
OK, so I finally read the charter even though I've been lurking about
for the last month or so. I guess I a better come up with a bio.

I'm Howard Chandler and I work at the Naval Research Laboratory doing
acoustical signal processing research for the Navy. It's a major geeky
job involving underwater acoustics propogation, computer models, linear
systems theory and data analysis and all that.

I do a lot of carpentry but I really want to learn to make fine furniture.
If I ever finnish all of the carpentry/handiman jobs around the house I'll
get around to more serious woodworking. Meanwhile, I've begun tooling
up.

I'm not a complete zealot when it comes which tool to use (power vs hand)
but I have begun to see how traditional woodworking methods using traditional,
non-electric tools can have great advantage in many instances. In the last
year or so, through reading rec.ww and this list, and the purchase of a few
planes and saws, I've come to appreciate the fact that they don't often make
'em like they used to. Since then, I've begun to taste a bit of the obsession
for visiting antique, pawn and flea markets.

I'm ideologically a user, not a collector, but can see how I could loose sight
of this in the quest for OLDTOOLS. Most of my OLDTOOLS started out as rusty
bargains which I'm still in the process of tuneing up and sharpening.

I've gotten alot of good advice reading this list.

I live in Mandeville, Lousiania USA., just outside of New Orleans, on
the north shore of Lake Ponchatrain.
