Galoots,
Recently I made "pirate chests" for my two young grand-daughters. We filled
them with gold colored foil covered chocolate coins, costume jewelry,
assorted gew-gaws, and a little real money. They like the fact that
each chest has different padlocks and keys so they can keep their treasures
private. We told them we found the chests when we went to the coast last
summer. I'm sure they suspect differently!

I made each chest from a firewood log. I'm not even sure what wood species
it is, but it was light colored and fine grained. I removed the bark, cut
off the ends, and then hollowed out the lid and body with chisels and
gouges after sawing off the lid and planing off the bottom. I then glued
and pegged the ends back onto the chests. I made reinforcing straps from
old steel lumber bundle straps. I applied latches, hinges and decoration I
got off the internet suppliers. The chests are about 16 inches wide and 6
or 8 inches in diameter. They were a hit.

My best,
Phil E.

Phil,

I didn't expect what I saw when I clicked on the link to the picture.
Wow! I love the design and the execution is outstanding. I'm sure they'll
treasure them (pun not intended, but given) for the rest of their lives.
Maybe a bit too bulky for it, but I could see them putting a leather strap
between the handles and using it as a purse in those teen (punk rock?)
years.

Well done and thanks for sharing.

Nicely done! I really like the size; it is perfect for storing little
treasures. Also, lots of visual interest to fuel young imaginations.

Phil,

You should have filled them with Fool's Gold.

Then they would be authentic Pyrite Chests.

Whether you are a dad or not, you have earned your place in the Dad Joke Hall of
Fame with that one.

OK this means Phil wins many Galoot Gold Coins and a bazillion Golden
Heart-String Points for his Treasure Boxes. Nice job on imprinting a solid
memory for those lucky kids!
