Galoots,
Recently I made "pirate chests" for my two young grand-daughters. We filled
them with gold colored foil covered chocolate coins, costume jewelry,
assorted gew-gaws, and a little real money. They like the fact that
each chest has different padlocks and keys so they can keep their treasures
private. We told them we found the chests when we went to the coast last
summer. I'm sure they suspect differently!

I made each chest from a firewood log. I'm not even sure what wood species
it is, but it was light colored and fine grained. I removed the bark, cut
off the ends, and then hollowed out the lid and body with chisels and
gouges after sawing off the lid and planing off the bottom. I then glued
and pegged the ends back onto the chests. I made reinforcing straps from
old steel lumber bundle straps. I applied latches, hinges and decoration I
got off the internet suppliers. The chests are about 16 inches wide and 6
or 8 inches in diameter. They were a hit.

My best,
Phil E.
