269499 "Eric Coyle" <ecoyle@t...> 2019‑12‑09 Re: Restoring Weathered Wood (John Leyden)
Jphn Leden was asking about restoring a table top whose leaves had been
stored outside....

To me it's a fools errand to try and restore them. After our Calgary flood a
few years back, there were, for whatever reason ,( eg: get the insurance
company to pay for restoring grandmas old tablestored in the basement) saw a
lot of similar kind of damage. Once the wood swells, the wood fibres are
crushed, and even when they dry, there are still gaps. Only with horseshoes
up yer A** could you hope to glue and reclamp them If you wanna try it. A
drafting eraser shield is excellent for cleaning and working glue into
narrow crevices success will not come easily, if ever achieved.

I you value your time, suggest just building a new top, but when it comes to
finishing..consider having them get it finished professionally, as getting a
flawless finish is another exercise in frustration

Just my thoughts

Eric
