So intriguing with the filagree casting that I just couldn’t resist. Mis-id’d as
a Craftsman try square, turns out it is union tool try square circa 1885,
predating the starret patent on a try square
And it was probably (exquisitly) re-japanned or was never used (not likely)
Sometimes you jus gotta trust yer gut eh?

Wow, that is styling. Nice score. That will look good around the shop.

Kirk in HMB, CA, who scored a bit today, but nothing that ornate.

Eric!

That's beautiful!  Doesn't matter what you had to pay, if you could afford it,
it's worth it.

A quibble though, I've heard all my life that Leroy developed the very first
combo square in the 1870s and founded the company to manufacture them and SO
much more in 1880.  Not so?

Got one. Mine came w/ a Goodell-Pratt rule but the seller id’ed the head as a
Standard Rule Co. design.

Here is a catalog page c. 1890 (about 1/2 way down the page; click to open

Part of the id is that it is a two piece casting. Look for four rivets holding
the thing together where the blade passes thru.

266033 Christopher Dunn <christopherdunn123@g...> 2018‑06‑21 Re: a little drive by gloat....
Eric

I've got one as well with a rule that doesn't have any makers mark,
and the groove is offset from the center. I don't use it much because
the rule is tapered down it's length, and thus can't draw a
perpendicular line to anything. So it just hangs on my tool board and
looks nice. I didn't realize it would work with a Starrett rule, so
maybe it's time to take it out of retirement.

Thanks,
Chris
