266027 Darrell & Kathy <larchmont@s...> 2018‑06‑20 Project completion gloat - 13th C chair project
Galoots

It looks like we almost have a new Galoot Image Central ready to go.
Time to take the new website for a test drive.
I have loaded a few more pix of my 13th Century Chair Project.

This is one of the big posts mounted in my pole lathe.
I had maybe a quarter of an inch to spare.

These are the rough split basswood blanks for the seat boards.

After some work with a hatchet, scrub plane, and jack plane I had
more shavings than board left.  It was actually not too bad.
Each pass with the scrub took off 1/8 of an inch, and with small
pieces like this you can finish a pass in 30 seconds.  So half
an inch disappears in a few minutes.  Then your arms fall off.
One of the blanks was so not-flat that I split it to make two
smaller pieces, otherwise the top and bottom would have
intersected.  And that's not good.

After a coat of shellac, but still not pegged together it looks like this:

I still want to take this to a couple of SCA.org events and being
able to pull it apart and flat-pack it is quite handy.

And for a reminder of what I was aiming for:

Close enough I think!

Next project?  SWMBO needs a new garden gate.
And it needs to be a Hobbit House Door.
Yikes.

Darrell

Wonderful chair. Are the through-tenons pinned?

After all of the scrub plane work and pole lathe turning, you must have two arms
and one leg that look like they belong on Popeye! Whatcha gonna do for the
other leg?? :)

Seriously, that is a well crafted chair.

I don't remember if that picture was in your documentation but if not
it should be! (for the galoots, we have the usual problem of folks not
_really_ believing that the old ways are really practical...)

Yup! I assume you are entering it in the Pennsic Arts and Sciences display?
