Kirk,
Self cleaning is great for regular cast iron. However with plated it will
discolor. Lye is the way to go or good old fashioned elbow grease and some steel
wool.

I use the self cleaning cycle on my oven to remove built up crud on used
cast iron cookware. Then re season per this link. I don't want to eat
other people's seasoning, rust, garage grit, etc.
