264208 Darrell & Kathy <larchmont@s...> 2017‑12‑12 Galoot Xmas BBQ
Galoots

Another Galoot BBQ has come and gone.
Saturday afternoon saw 5 shop guests appear on my doorstep,
plus two kids who tagged along with their daddy.   Unfortunately
we had three last minute cancellations due to family issues.

I sharpened a couple of planes in the morning to make sure we had
something that would cut in case we needed to plane some wood.

We spent some time in the shop playing with various and sundry tools.
Roy was interested in chair making tools, so I showed him the ones
I used for my windsor chairs.  He is off to help set up some Ugandan
villagers with a pole lathe in January, so he wanted to see things that
I had made on my lathe and some tools as well.  Sounds like quite
an adventure.

Mihai brought his japanese waterstones.  These are the big blocky
chunks of natural stone that cost bag$ of dollar$ if you had to
buy them.  But he's a geologist, so I think he acquired these as
rock samples .  Mihai also brought a small piece of Port
Orford Cedar, that he uses to test his japanese smoothers.
So we set to work pulling very thin shavings off that bit of wood.
It has a neat scent, rather spicy.

Richard showed me how to hone some of those really teeny gouges,
the little ones less that 1mm wide.  And then he converted one of my
most frustrating tools into an actual working vee-chisel.  Now that I
have a decent working model I can fix the others.

Dinner was a roast turkey, because it was cold outside and the
turkey just gets banged into the oven and it takes care of itself.

Good friends, sharp tools, great food, a really fine day!
Darrell
