Greetings,

I have been lurking for well over a year and I figure its time to
say hello.

My name is Doug Berch. I live in the Lansing, Michigan area. I'm 46 and
happily married to a woman who finds listening to me talk about back
bevels and saw sets interesting. Really! We both work at Elderly
Instruments, a music store in Lansing. Before moving to Lansing I lived
in Colorado for 12 years and made a living as a musician. I'm
originally from NYC.

After a 20 year break I decided to try my hand again at making musical
instruments. I felt very drawn to working almost exclusively with hand
tools (I have a b**d saw in the garage) and I began to gather them and
learn to tune and use them. This led to a long period of focusing more
on tools and their use rather than instrument making. This is how I
stumbled on to the porch. The porch has been a great resource and
reference. Almost all the questions I have had were answered by digging
through the archives. I've been pretty much learning on my own and the
porch has helped me avoid trying to reinvent the wheel many times.

I'm currently working on a few dulcimers and I'm on the drawing board
for a banjo. I'm having a great time and I do believe that if I dig deep
enough I'll find a few instruments in those piles of shavings.

All the best,

Doug
