123507 "Robert Weber" <raweber@m...> 2003‑10‑22 Bio
Gentle Galoots, good morning.

I have been lurking for a few weeks and have thoroughly enjoyed the
conversation. It’s been entertaining as well as educational. I belong to
several woodworking-type lists, and one thing that I’ve noticed is that
real, honest-to-goodness flames are non-existent. It’s refreshing. Anyway, I
thought that I would introduce myself.

My name is Rob Weber and I currently reside with my wife and two children in
Peoria, Illinois. This January we’ll bump that to three rugrats and probably
call it quits there. My day job is civil engineering (What’s the difference
between civil engineers and mechanical engineers? Mechanical engineers build
weapons, civil engineers build targets) and I am also quite active in my
church. The web link below will take you to my website where I’ve posted
some music that I’ve written.

I began woodworking just a few years ago after a number of years of general
home handyman type stuff. I started with a Shopsmith that I still find very
useful, but as I am using woodworking as a pleasant diversion and hobby, the
more contemplative aspects of hand-tooling appeal to me. So far I’ve built
some multi-media shelves for my church (to hold the projectors in the
sanctuary) and a new window to fill a large, rectangular hole in my finished
attic, where my seven-year-old will reside after the baby’s born. I
hand-made the window both because I didn’t want to special order one that
small and I need practice cutting mortise and tenon joints. Now I’m
convinced that I need even more practice.

I’ll probably end up as a hybrid galoot/normite, but my heart will always be
in the hand-tooling. I think that it’s the artist in me. The tailed
apprenticed will do the milling and sizing, but the joinery will all be by
hand. I’ve been practicing hand cut dovetails, but I’m again convinced that
I still need more practice.

For the time being, I will probably mostly lurk with the occasional
question, but I did want to thank you all for simply being who you are.

Cheers,

Rob in Peoria
