Certainly lots of IT guys (and gals, right Pam?).

I've been in IT for 29 years, 12 of them teaching community
college and university computer science. Speaking for myself,
after twiddling bits by remote control all day, it's nice to
pick up a piece of iron and butcher a piece of wood. Or just
fondle, admire, clean, or restore a real tool.

The recent plow (plough, Jeff) discussion notwithstanding, the
bugs are usually easier to find too. Also, IT types often think
like (or are) engineers and so have an instinctive apprciation
for tools that work well or at least represent interesting
designs.

Just my $.02

103000 "Craig Davis" <craigdavis@c...> 2002‑02‑11 new galoot - bio
Thought I'd take a quick moment to post a bio in case I come up with
something brilliant to say (not much danger though) soon.

My name is Craig Davis and I am a 29 year old computer/phone tech. I have
done some rough carpentry work with my Dad but just started doing finer work
over the last year (since I finally got a garage). I started as many do,
watching Norm and Roy on PBS and cable. My first aquisitions were all of
the tailed variety but inheriting my great-grandfather's tool chest spurred
me into hand tools. He was a farmer/carpenter and my grandfather was a
well-known finish carpenter. Most of the tools in it were relatively
modern, but there were a few old rusty handsaws that I have yet to clean up.

I've since picked up a few hand planes and saws and chisels. I admit that
time constraints have me still roughing things out with the tablesaw, but
all my finish cuts are now done with hand tools and I'm in the process of
learning dovetails and hand-cut mortises. I've lurked for only a few days
and I've already learned much so I think I'll be hanging around for quite
some time.

Well, I work as a paralegal, but the office technology is my
responsibility as well. The old tool thing and the computer/IT stuff
both started and developed at the same time in my life. Both seem to
drive each other, the more my daily bread depends on the tech, the
greater seems the need to neander as a counterpoint.

Should all the power from the wall socket cease, it's nice to know I
have other skills, rudimentary as they are.

RE: "Do all US-galoots work as IT guys or in a educational institution?"
Nope. But I suspect a lot do.

RE: "What's up with that?"
No magic. Galootosity is probably equally distributed amongst the
population. InfoTechnology and educational institutions were/are in the
forefront of acquiring and using new communications technologies. And more
comfortable with them. We're just wired first. Give it a few years. I
suspect all Galoots will eventually have equal opportunity to get wired.

Yes, and I think Esther has a technical job of some sort at Kodak
(really just a guess). Anyhow, I'd suspect we IT types get hooked on
the possibilities of non-powered woodworking, all trying to figure a
way to get out of IT. :)

I just know I took to it like a duck; and it certainly is productive
and relaxing.

Well, I work at a state university, but in the
maintenance department, doing HVAC maintenance, etc.
I have been interested in hand tools etc. since I was
old enough to almost cut my finger off with a handsaw
(4 yrs old?), and the Old Tools list got me involved
using a computer, when we were given computer access

Lots of Oz galoots, too. But the answer is simple - between them, IT
guys and educational institutions are sitting on about 95% of the

Easy, having passed the half century mark last year and
knowing the age distribution of those who answered a survey
last year was high in the late '30's and heavily skewed to
older than 40, it is good to see us welcoming younger blood.
Gotta have someone appreciative to pass our treasures to

If you have to ask, the answer to the question is probably no. My
girlfriend is a techie, and thinks it's pretty funny how out of touch I am
with the lingo and acronyms. She told me last night what IT was and I've
already forgotten!

In my field, I guess I could be considered a galoot. I make a living playing
piano and accordion, mostly playing music that was in vogue anywhere from
40-100 years before I was born (I'm 30). I also play things that could be
classified as crazy noise, but I don't get paid as much to do that. I think
of being a musician and being a galoot as nearly the same thing- both give me
the satisfaction of developing manual skills and making stuff myself. The
difference is there's no sharp objects in music.

103104 Jim Nelson <jgn@a...> 2002‑02‑12 RE: new galoot - bio
IT = Information Technology. It encompasses what used
to be called data processing, software engineering,
computer programming, etc., as well as more modern
applications like web site construction, network work,
and data mining ( fancy phrasing for what's often the
exploitation of commercial databases to figure out who
to annoy with phone calls and junk (e)mail begging your
support for this or that bit of institutional mendacity ).

IT departments tend to measure their success by the only
means that they can measure - the length of their meetings.

See the comic strip, "Dilbert", for details.

Old tools are definitely not required.

Welcome to the Porch, the hot cider is at this end.

WRT where people work - Let's Just Say (tm the MofA) since OldTools are

That's what I've always called it as have all of the drywallers I've
ever worked with.

Eight inch floppy disks (late seventies, early eighties) are talked
about like we'd talk about an early Disston. Anybody who's worked on
Sixties vintage stuff is treated like Henry Disston himself, and anyone
who's worked on a valve (vacuum tube) computer might as well be Cesar
Chelor reincarnated.

*That*, all of thirty-odd years old, is like Colonial Williamsburg and
the Studley chest rolled into one.

The distinction depends on wether one considers elapsed years, or
elapsed proportion of the entire history of the subject to be the
relevant measure.

I've never heard one called a hawk, but I'm picturing in my mind
the way a plasterer holds the board out at the end of his arm, and
it might be thought to bear a bit of resemblance to the way a
falconer holds his bird. Just a guess, but I can't think of a better
explanation right now...
